Are 'it girls' in Control of the Fashion World?
(Tangent Magazine - Tuesday, April 20, 2010)
Recently I have noticed that more fashion press dedicated to who is sitting front row, rather than the importance of the collection on the runway.
Since when is the celebrity making an appearance at a fashion event just as important as the pieces on display? With new "it girls" popping up all over the place I can barely keep up with the who's who of the ready to wear front row.
With Alexa Chung being the hottest fashionista of the moment, the question has to be asked; who do we look to for fashion guidance- celebrities or fashion houses? Alexa is very much a finger on the fashion pulse kinda girl. She manages to effortlessly combine vintage, high street and tailored designer pieces into the must have look of the moment – it is as if it is almost by accident.
It's not just Alexa who has this incredibly empowering force on the fashion industry, all her buddies seem to be in on the act. The cool crew of Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldolf, Taylor Momsen and Mary –Kate Olsen are all seen sitting front row at Fashion Week. This is not intentional, but rather the focus of the media publishing the images in order of priority. Recognisable celebrities first; carbon copy models second.
In February this year Alexa debuted her own clothing line for US chain store Madewell. Her pieces were signature of her layered and effortless look, with socks and pinafores worn with brogues and high waisted shorts reminiscent of her SOHO/BOHO look. With countless celebrity friends towing the fashion line, the entourage of cool kids is defiantly subtracting attention from the fashion shows that they attend. In fact the clothes worn by the 'it girls' to runway shows gather as much press and the designs on display.
With media and fashion evolving to a digital medium we are now more up to the minute than ever before. It only takes a second to find out who wore what last night in New York and where to get it.
How do the heads of Dior, Gucci, Balenciaga and Chanel feel about sharing their limelight on their big night? Take it in your stride Karl, if the right 'it girl' is sitting front row it could be your show making the biggest splash on Tavi Gevinson's fashion blog.
